DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION (DEI) STATEMENT

“We believe diversity strengthens our community, equity ensures access and opportunity, and inclusion enables every member of our school to participate fully and confidently.”

KIS DEI Statement

At Korean International School, we are an international community that values the diversity of experiences, perspectives, and identities that each student and staff member brings. With more than 900 students and over 150 staff representing over 25 nationalities and cultures, we are committed to creating a learning and working environment where everyone is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Since the establishment of our International Section in 1994, KIS has remained dedicated to nurturing a community in which every individual feels a strong sense of belonging and is empowered to thrive. We believe diversity strengthens our community, equity ensures access and opportunity, and inclusion enables every member of our school to participate fully and confidently.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable community that respects and values diversity in all its forms. This includes, but is not limited to, differences in race, nationality, socioeconomic status, religious affiliation, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, and neurodiversity. We celebrate the rich diversity of our international community and recognise the importance of respecting and valuing individuals from all cultural and national backgrounds.

We provide equitable access to learning, professional opportunities, and appropriate support for all students and staff, including those with physical disabilities, learning differences, and diverse neurological profiles. This includes, for example, academic accommodations for diverse learners, language support services for multilingual students and families, and flexible work arrangements or targeted professional development opportunities for staff. We recognise that individuals learn, work, and contribute in different ways, and we value approaches that honour individuality while supporting growth, wellbeing, and success. We are also mindful of the diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds within our community, ensuring that opportunities are accessible and inclusive for all.

We foster a welcoming and respectful school culture—both on campus and online—where every individual feels safe, valued, and able to express their identity, including their race, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural background, and beliefs. We actively promote understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion through education, training, dialogue, and awareness initiatives. We encourage open and constructive conversations that help our community recognise bias, build empathy, and strengthen mutual respect.

We uphold equitable and transparent practices across all areas of school life, including admissions, recruitment, employment, and daily interactions. We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or exclusion on any grounds, including race, nationality, socioeconomic status, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability, and this extends to behaviour in online spaces. We are committed to addressing concerns promptly and responsibly. Members of our community are encouraged to report any concerns or incidents to the school via email at enquiry@kis.edu.hk, so that appropriate action can be taken in a timely and supportive manner.

We continually review and strengthen our practices to advance inclusion across the school. We invest in professional learning to ensure staff are equipped to support diverse learners, collaborate effectively, and make informed, inclusive decisions. We remain committed to transparency, reflection, and ongoing improvement, including actively addressing unconscious bias and embracing new perspectives that help our school grow as an inclusive environment for all.
