STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

KIS provides learning opportunities beyond the school, both locally and globally, to enhance students’ learning. Students develop a greater sense of international mindedness and social responsibility through these activities

Over the past few years, Prefects have been chosen through a rigorous selection process that includes applications, interviews, teacher feedback, and mid-term evaluations. As integral members of the learner community, they have successfully organized and managed several major school events, such as the Christmas Market, Senior Prom, School Fair, and Graduation. Beyond these significant responsibilities, Prefects consistently demonstrate exemplary behaviour in their daily school life, uphold school discipline, and oversee student activities during their designated duty periods.

  • Leadership Role: The Head Prefect is the senior student leader, often representing the student body in meetings with staff and school administration.
  • Duties: They oversee the prefect team, supervise events, and act as a role model for other students. They may also facilitate communication between students and staff.
  • Responsibilities: The Head Prefect may be involved in setting school policies, managing student behaviour, and leading initiatives to improve the school environment.

  • Supportive Role: Prefects assist the Head Prefect and help maintain discipline within the school. They often serve as mentors to younger students.
  • Duties: They may supervise common areas, help during school events, and provide support in various activities like peer mentoring or organizing clubs.
  • Responsibilities: They are expected to uphold school values, enforce rules, and promote a positive school culture.

At the Korean International School, our Year 5 & 6 Student Leaders play a pivotal role in fostering a positive and inclusive school environment. These young leaders are entrusted with the responsibility to model exemplary behaviour, uphold the values of respect and honesty, and actively engage in school and community initiatives. They serve as role models to their peers, promote a culture of kindness and cooperation, and assist in the organisation of school events. By taking the student leadership pledge, they commit to maintaining high standards of conduct and contributing to a safe and supportive school atmosphere.

It is a traditional feature in British schools that provides pastoral care and healthy competition between the students of each of the four houses.
The word “house” refers to a grouping of students.

Establishing a Student Council and promoting student voice is essential in encouraging democratic decision-making, providing a platform for students to express their needs and concerns, and developing responsible and engaged future leaders.

The Student Council and student voice initiatives at KIS are integral to our commitment to student empowerment, inclusivity, and leadership development. By fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration, we aim to create a supportive and thriving school community where every student’s voice is heard and valued.

The Student Council and student voice initiatives at KIS serve the following purposes:

  • Representative Voice: To provide students with a formal platform to voice their ideas, concerns, and opinions on matters that impact their educational experience and school life.
  • Leadership Development: To offer opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, organisational abilities, and teamwork through active participation in decision-making processes.
  • School Improvement: To collaborate with the school administration, staff, and teachers to contribute ideas and suggestions for the continual improvement of the school community.
  • Community Engagement: To promote a strong sense of community, inclusivity, and school spirit by organising events and activities that involve the entire student body.

The Student Council will be composed of elected student representatives from different grade levels and may include the following positions:

  • President: The head of the Student Council is responsible for leading meetings and representing the student body in various forums.
  • Vice-President: Assisting the President in their duties and responsibilities.
  • Secretary and public relations officer: Responsible for documenting meeting minutes and maintaining records.
  • Treasurer: In charge of managing the Student Council’s finances and budget.
  • Class Representatives: Elected representatives from each grade level, acting as the voice of their respective classmates.
  • Elections for Student Council positions will be held annually to ensure regular rotations and provide opportunities for new students to participate.
  • Elections will be conducted through a fair and transparent process, allowing interested students to campaign and present their ideas to the student body.
  • The school administration and staff will oversee the election process to ensure its integrity.
  • The Student Council will meet bi-weekly to discuss student concerns, plan events, and make decisions on school-related matters.
  • Meetings will be chaired by the President or designated student leader and meeting minutes will be recorded and shared with the student body and school administration.
  • Decisions made by the Student Council will be communicated to the student body, and where appropriate, actions will be taken to address students’ concerns and implement approved initiatives.

In addition to the Student Council, KIS will actively promote student voice through various channels, including:

  • Surveys and Feedback: Regularly seek input from students on school policies, curriculum, and extracurricular activities.
  • Open Forums: Organizing open forums or town-hall-style meetings where students can express their opinions, ask questions, and discuss school matters.
  • Advisory Groups: Establishing advisory groups that include students, teachers, and staff to address specific topics, such as student well-being or school facilities.
  • School-wide Events: Take an active role in planning and event management, as well as specific year-based initiatives.
  • The Student Council will cover the above-mentioned channels.
  • The school administration will provide support and guidance to the Student Council to ensure their initiatives align with the school’s mission and values.
  • The school will recognise the efforts and contributions of the Student Council and student voice participants through certificates, awards, or other forms of acknowledgement.
