ART & DESIGN

Art is not only about knowledge and skill, but also a record of the evolution process of civilisation. It is a testament to human civilisation, representing some of the highest forms of human creativity. Art education is to inspire students to develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design through practice and theory. Students then contribute their creativity to society and become part of the culture.

Based on the National Curriculum for England, students at KIS learn a wide range of art and design knowledge and techniques, including visual elements, design principles, and the history of art, as well as manipulate various media in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Year 1 to 6, students learn how to create basic shapes, form, pattern, and scenes, with various media to achieve aesthetic purpose. The learning objectives are listed below.

  • Select and organise information for creation
  • Select an appropriate medium to express feelings and ideas

Year 7 to 9, students are taught to develop ideas and techniques in drawing, painting, design, printmaking and sculpture. The learning objectives are listed below.

  • Develop skills and knowledge
  • Approach the basic theory of art and design
  • Develop ideas from observations, experience, memories and imagination
  • Select appropriate knowledge, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas and feelings

Year 10 and 11 students follow the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) syllabus. First, students learn observation drawing by using various media, then develop their own ideas from initial attempts to final solutions. They explore various aspects of Art and Design through practice and art history study. Students are required to complete one piece of coursework and one exam in Year 11. Year 12 and 13 students follow the Cambridge International AS and A Level syllabus, which is an advanced level from IGCSE. Students are expected to produce more sophisticated artwork for their coursework and exams. Please view “KIS A Levels Options Booklet” for more details.

The purposes of assessment in art and design are to encourage and motivate students, help students develop self-confidence and self-respect, and develop students’ interest in art. Students are assessed by the learning process and the learning outcome. The learning process includes developing ideas, learning attitudes, learning behaviour, and effort. The learning outcome concerns the quality of visual images and the ability to manipulate media.

Students from Year 1 to Year 9 are assessed by their classwork. All artworks, tasks, and activities will receive marks. Marks are awarded based on creativity, aesthetics, technique, and class participation.

Year 10 students are assessed by both classwork and exams.

There are internal and external assessments for Year 11, 12 and 13 students, which include coursework and exams. The assessment criteria are based on the Cambridge IGCSE and A Level standards.
