IGCSE and AS EXAMINATIONS – SUMMER 2007
INFORMATION TO CANDIDATES AND PARENTS

Candidates and their parents are asked to make time to discuss and be fully aware of all requirements and arrangements pertaining to the Cambridge Examinations which will begin in May.

The students have been briefed on the various important aspects of their preparations and the examinations while the teachers continue to work through revision lessons and to guide the students on their individual revision strategies.

Please note and share the following guidelines.

EXAMINATION TIMETABLE

The students were each given two copies of the timetable some time ago: one copy for the student and the other to be in a prominent place in the home as the family also should be aware of the examination dates.

STUDY LEAVE

The final day of lessons for G11 and G12 before the examinations begin will be FRIDAY 4 MAY. From that day the candidates will attend school on days or parts of days when they have an examination. After the final day of scheduled examinations the students in G11 will return to school for a special programme of activities which will focus on moving on to G12 and the worlds of further study and employment. In addition there will be opportunities to have some relaxation and fun within the programme.

G12 students will not return to school after the end of their examinations which continue into June.

HOME SUPPORT

During important revision times students need to have a suitable place as a work base where books and revision materials can remain undisturbed.

Students may feel more hungry or less hungry during the stress of revision. Snacking may suit some individuals more than full meals as appetite levels may fluctuate.

Time to rest and leave revision behind is essential and should be planned and negotiated. Some flexibility around home chores and family duties should be offered.

Distractions need to be avoided e.g. social use of computers, intrusive phone calls, leaving the study area repeatedly to get food, drinks etc.

WEATHER ISSUES

It can be expected in Hong Kong that there will be adverse weather conditions during the summer season. In all weather matters pertaining to postponement or cancellation of examinations, local and international, the Hong Kong Examinations Authority alone has the power to make such decisions.

It is imperative that in poor or deteriorating weather conditions candidates listen to the radio or look at the Hong Kong Observatory website. Schools do not individually have any right to make decisions about examinations in their own examination centres (schools).

When the weather might possibly give rise to concerns about an examination, candidates must not phone the school. Clarification will be available via radio or weather website more quickly; there is no point in contacting the school.
Students should keep an umbrella and a spare school shirt in their locker during the examination period.

It is also advisable to wear or bring to school the school sweater, as air conditioning in the examination hall will be necessary. For comfort in air conditioning girls are advised to wear their school trousers rather than the school skirt.

CODE OF CONDUCT

The international examination boards make it very clear that candidates have a responsibility to ensure that their conduct during examinations and at all times when in the exam hall does not compromise the candidate or the Examination Board. Rules are intentionally strict and sanctions may be applied which include the loss of as many as all examinations taken in the session (Summer 2007 Session).

Candidates are permitted to bring into the exam room only the writing materials required for that examination and an ID card. The required pens (and pencils when appropriate) must be brought in a clear pencil case or plastic bag. No correction fluid is permitted in any examination.

No drinks may be brought. Water will be available in the exam hall.

Talking inside the exam hall is not permitted at any time.

No mobile phones or any other electronic device capable of transmitting or storing information may be taken into the exam hall.

No purses, wallets or any other items of personal property are to be taken into the examination hall. Valuables and bags must be placed in lockers in good time before the start of each examination.

On each examination day students are required to wear normal, correct school uniform. Items of personal clothing may not be worn.

EXAMINATION RESULTS

The examination results are scheduled to be released electronically by the Cambridge Examination Board to schools on 9th August. If there is no delay by Cambridge, the results should be available to candidates on 9th August. It is essential, however, that candidates check the KIS website before going to school to collect their results as delays can arise in the system.

KIS WEBSITE

Full examination information and related information can be checked on the school website. It will be used also for any important messages after study leave has begun. Candidates should check the website regularly and frequently.
