INTERNATIONAL SECTION COURSES
Introduction
The Korean International School’s Summer School
2008 offers a range of exciting academic and recreational
courses for students aged 4-16. All courses will be
taught in English, except for the designated foreign
language courses.
Our Summer School courses will provide students with
an excellent opportunity to further develop their English
language skills through being immersed in an English
speaking environment. English as a Second Language (ESL)
lessons will also be available to those students who
need extra support and assistance in developing their
English language skills.
General Information
Summer School 2008 will run for four weeks in July.
Classes will be held from 9.00 am – 12.00 noon.
Applicants may choose to enrol for 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks.
Courses are filled on a first come first served basis.
Some courses fill up very quickly and late applications
may be unsuccessful. The deadline for enrolment
is June 20, 2008.
A late fee of $100 will apply for applications which
are received after this deadline.

No refunds will be given for non-attendance or school
closure due to severe weather conditions.
Confirmations
Course enrolment confirmations will be sent out by
mail in late June. Students will also receive a Summer
School information pack.
Supervision
The Summer School hours are from 9.00-12.00 noon. Students
should arrive at school after 8.45am and be picked up
by 12.15pm. Adult supervision will not be provided before
or after these times.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Provision
For Year 1-6 students, special ESL
support lessons will be provided for those students
who have never really studied in an all English environment
before. Students who feel less confident about communicating
in English will attend specialized ESL lessons during
the language components of the course and then join
their peers for the recreational activities.
Please be sure to tick the relevant box on the application
form so that your child can receive this special ESL
assistance if necessary.

Through a series of fun and interactive
pictographs, the Kindergarten children will learn
to recognize the sounds and shapes of the letters
of the alphabet. Each day they will follow the
Letterland Programme and participate in the activities
associated with the letter of the day. These fun
activities include art, music/movement, pencil
skills, storytime and imaginative play. They will
develop their fine and gross motor skills, social
skills and have fun learning basic English language
skills. Students will also learn some basic Mandarin
and participate in some organized games.

A fantastic and fun way to ease
your way into big school! Our 4 week programme
helps to build your child’s confidence and
their fine and gross motor skills. We will do
this through language games, arts and crafts and
lots of exciting activities! We will be focusing
on a theme a week, so there will be plenty of
different things to be learnt! Students will also
learn some Mandarin and participate in sports
and games. |

Students will study and look
at various well-known fairytales through reading,
role-play, writing and craft. Thay will step into
the lives of characters, and will explore similarities
and differences in typical fairytale patterns,
themes and settings.
Towards the end of the course, pupils will be
introduced to various cultural interpretations
and versions of Cinderella, which will encourage
them to adopt alternate perspective as readers.
Students will also get to play sports and games,
practise their Mandarin and enjoy some interesting
arts and crafts, computer and music oriented activities.

It's going to be a Blockbuster
Summer at K.I.S.! With all the superhero movies
already out and coming soon to theatreslike Superman,
Spider-Man, Iron Man, Batman, andthe Incredible
Hulk, don't you think its time to join the legion
of supers?Lear to read, write and speak English
in an adventerous way. Students will accquire
the language and skills needed to making their
own blockbuster superhero. In addition to creating
their own superhero, students will also make a
comic book, design a movie poster, and enjoy dramatic
play.
This course will feature stories about the past
and present, what could happen in the future,
and even a few legends from long ago. Students
will listen to, read, write and talk about these
stories as well as their own past and present
experiences and possible futures.
Students in this course will also have the opportunity
to explore their creative side in music and art,
play some sports and games and learn some Mandarin.

Did you ever wonder what you
would do if you were stranded on a deserted island?
What would you eat? Where would you go? What about
wild animals?How would you entertain yourself?
Students will challenge their adventurous sides
while they explore exciting stories of human and
animal survival, learn orienteering, practice
outdoor safety and create their own survival narratives.
Who knew that Science, Literacy, Math and Geography
would be the keys to surviving the great outdoors?
It is gauaranteed to be a "wild" time.
Besides the literary focus, students will have
fun playing sports and games,explore their musical
talents, create beautiful works of art, improve
their computer skills, and brush up their Mandarin
speaking skills. |

Their are some animals that are
best avoided in Australia. Is the Possum one of
them? The Koala? the killer 'Roo? The Salt water
Crocodile? The Dropping Bear? The answer may not
be the most obvious choice.
Do you know what a didgeridoo is? A boomerang
ora witchetty grub? Go back in time and learnabout
some of the magic of the indigenous people of
Australia. Find out which aboriginal words have
been adopted into Australian English.
Follow Blinky Bill, Wombo and Slodge on their
outback adventures while learning about nature
and conservation. If you've ever wanted to go
to Australia or you are facinated by Australian
animals, come and join us!
Students in this course will also have the opportunity
to brush up their Mandarin language skills, enjoy
some music and drama activities and play some
exciting sports and games.

Have you ever wondered.....
Everything you've ever wanted to know about pirates
and morel! Students will explore this facinating
subject through English, History, Geography, Art,
Drama, and music activities.
Besides the academic focus, students will enjoy
participating in sports, games and swimming. They
will be able to express their creative talents
through arts and crafts, computers, music and
drama. Some Mandarin lessons will also be provided.

Global warming and pollution
are topics that everyone is talking about. Let’s
explore the world and the problems that pollution
has caused.How can we help stop or reduce pollution
in Hong Kong and around the world?Local and global
evidence of deterioration of our living space
will be presented. Students will better understand
the different factors interacting with the environment.
Our young investigators will follow the scientific
method to analize these environmental problems
to find practical solutions for them.
Students in this course will also fun arts and
craft, drama games, music appreciation, sports,
computer, study some Mandarin and even get to
do some swimming!

Students will learn about a variety
of different writing genres in this course. Each
week of the course will be dedicated to a particular
genre of writing such as stories, essays and feature
articles just to name a few.

Students joining this course will read the screenplays
of some selected television sitcoms and films.
Besides learning a lot of new vocabulary in an
enjoyable and meaningful context, students will
also have the chance to improve their spoken English
through role-playing and acting out some of the
scripts.
After viewing, students will be expected to share
their personal responses to the films and sitcoms
and discuss the relevant themes and issues. Students
will develop their reading, writing, listening
and speaking skills in this course.

Students will be involved in creating a summer
school magazine which will showcase the students'
writing from the course. This is a great opportunity
for students to improve their English writing

This course is suitable for those
students who lack confidence in Mathematics or
who underachieve in the subject. The course is
designed to give students a boost and help change
their attitudes towards the subject.
Students will collect interesting mathematical
information by direct measurement or through Internet
searches. Tables and graphs will be produced with
ICT to compare this information and to come up
with a tool to predict the outcome of other similar
situations. Some interesting, interactive on-line
tutorials will also supplement the course.

Severe Weather
When severe weather is in effect, please listen to
the radio or watch the television for the latest details
in regard to the weather warning issued by the Hong
Kong Observatory and the school closure announcements
made by the Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau
(Tel: 2891-0088).
In the event of school closure or early dismissal due
to severe weather, KIS will make the appropriate announcement
on our school website within a reasonable time. Please
check the information about school closure procedures
on our website at www.kis.edu.hk.
