Demerit Criteria: With Effect from May 3rd 2011
The demerit system is an important part of the overall
management in classrooms. Teachers generally try to
counsel and warn students before any demerits are issued
but for repeated misbehaviour clearly warnings and counseling
have not ‘worked’ and there have to be clear
negative consequences [i.e., penalties] for the misbehaviour.
By putting a system in place that all teachers use,
students will have a much clearer idea of expected behaviour
and the classroom environment should be one that is
conducive to learning. The school has identified the
general misbehaviours that interfere with the learning
of the class as a whole and these are listed below.
As in past years the punctuality, behaviour, completion
of homework, bringing of materials to class and language
spoken by students is being monitored in all classes
by every teacher. Each class has a student who has been
chosen as the monitor and that student takes a file
to every class during the school day where teachers
can code the demerit, the date it was issued, and initial
the entry. The following infractions will be given demerits:
Infraction |
Code |
Description |
Punctuality |
P |
Students need to be in homeroom by 8:15 and
they have 5 minutes between classes to collect
materials and proceed to the next class. Students
who are tardy to homeroom or subject class are
issued a demerit. |
Behaviour |
B |
Students should be paying attention in class
and not chatting with friends. When given a direction
by the teacher this should be followed. All students
need to cooperate with the teacher so that teaching
and learning is not disrupted. |
Homework |
H |
All teachers assign homework regularly and
students who do not do homework or complete very
little of what has been assigned are issued a
demerit. |
Textbooks |
T |
Students who do not bring their materials to
class are issued a demerit as bringing notebooks,
photocopies, and he like is a basic requirement
for all classes to proceed properly. |
|
L |
Students who do not respond in English to teachers
during class time except for language subjects
(Korean and Mandarin) will be issued a demerit. |
|
U |
Students must be wearing full school uniform
at all times as described in the 7.0 Dress Policy,
KIS School Rules. If they do not adhere to this
policy they will receive a demerit. |
At the end of each day, homeroom teachers review the
class profile document and take note of the total number
of demerits each student has accumulated. The demerit
total has consequences that follow and parents and students
should take careful note of these which are listed below:
Demerit Total |
Consequences that follow |
5 |
The homeroom teacher will take the student
aside and issue a verbal warning. No written record
entered in the student file. |
10 |
There is a meeting with the principal where
counselling and warning is issued. No written
record entered in the student file. Student serves
an after school detention for every new demerit
received. |
15 |
Temporary Record: Parent is informed about
the demerit total and a written record is placed
in the student file. This record can be removed
if the student does not accumulate more than 20
demerits. |
20 |
Permanent Record: A permanent
record is entered in the student file. The parent
will be required to come in with the student (in
uniform) for an interview. |
30 |
Probation: Parent and student
to attend an interview with the principal. Parent
given a letter that places the student on probationary
standing in the school which may result in the
student not being allowed to continue studies
in the next school term depending on future demerit
totals. |
40 |
Final Warning: Letter warning
of discontinuation of studies given to parent
and student. |
50 |
Discontinuation: Student is
not allowed to continue studies in the school
in the next term. |
Demerits are accumulated by quarter and each new quarter
students start with zero demerits but students who have
had the demerit total entered on their report cards
will not have these expunged. The dates for the quarters
are listed below:
Term |

Dates: 2011_2012 |

In closing
Korean International School wants all students to develop
the habits and attitudes necessary and basic to successful
study, and the demerit system outlined above is a realistic
way of achieving that goal. Parents and students need
to understand that schooling is a serious matter and
that only students with the proper behaviour will be
allowed to continue their studies at our school.
Should any questions arise concerning the demerit system,
these should be brought to the immediate attention of
the principal as the details of the system have been
placed on the school website and distributed in writing
to parents. It is very important that parents and students
take careful note of the information presented here
as the demerit system may affect the future of students
at the school.
